This product is ok. It takes a few steps. An application of glue/filler then 4 hours to dry. When you get to the final step you're required to mix your colors. The problem is the heat-curing process.

You're required to apply a piece of texture over the color. Holding it in place (with tape or by hand), you place an included wood-dowel with metal disc attached to the surface of a hot iron. Then, apply that to the texture to cause a heat-cure.

Well, that part of the process doesn't go well since the included heat transfer tool never seems to heat up enough or transfer enough heat to the material. I finally applied the iron directly to the texture fabric and got it to cure/dry. The repair is OK. I'm sure if I could practice 15 times with this stuff then do my repair, it would look better. The problem is, nobody is going to build up experience/practice with this product prior to an application that matters. And, the results of the novice taint the products potential I'm sure.

Unless you have a nearly invisible scratch or a very tiny hole in your leather or fabric, I would recommend you not waste your money on this product. You will have to mix the colors that come with the kit to try to match your existing fabric's color. This is very difficult to do unless the fabric you need to repair is a color that doesn't need to be mixed, like black, white or yellow. You will also have to "heat cure" the repair using a little metal dowel that doesn't get hot or stay hot. Without enough heat, the "repair area" doesn't cure so the repair compound remains moist and tacky and then you will have to try to clean it all off to make sure it doesn't get on your clothes when you sit on the area that was repaired. This may work on a hole no bigger than a cigarette burn, but I have my doubts about that. I urge you not to waste your time, money and energy with this repair kit. You will be very disappointed and the end result will most likely look much worse than before you tried to repair it.

Before I bought this product, I bought a competitor brand that everyone rated as 5 stars and that product, quite frankly, was worthless and didn't work for me.

The item I repaired is a dark chocolate brown leather couch that had a V-shaped 3" rip in the upper left corner on the back of the couch. Due to the surface being vertical, repair was challenging, as the filling compound had a tendency to drip out, so it took multiple applications of it to build it up without it running all down the back of the couch.

That being said, this product worked better than its competitor BUT......you will need some patience, and it is NOT doable in one application or one day. Here is what I had to do to make it work on a vertical surface:

1. First off, I had to apply multiple layers of the filling compound over a period of a few days to get it to fill properly.

2. Mixing the dye/color was no issue, as I have an art background. I expect that someone with no art or craft skills might have issues with the mixing and application of the compound, but it wasn't an issue for me. The color match was great an no problem at all. I just kept adding black to the brown until I got it dark enough. I used an old cottage cheese container lid as a little mixing tray.

3. It took 4-5 days of applying the color compound to get it right. Not the color, but the texture and final product. I ended up totally abandoning the "heat transfer tool" as it was completely useless. Even though they said not to, I used an old clothes iron anyway BUT I put flannel pillowcase over the spot, folded in half for extra thickness and protection, and ironed it through that, taping the "texture paper" in place with packing tape underneath. That worked well much better than the silly transfer tool. The only hiccup was if some spots were dry and others weren't, applying more heat made the previously dried spots flake off and stick to the paper, undoing parts that you'd already one. Argh. That's what took the longest. I had to take an old butter knife, scrape off the dried compound from the paper so it was clean again, and redo a few times. FINALLY it took and my husband is delighted with the results; he says you can't even tell it's been repaired.

So in the end it worked, and saved me $$$ on having someone else repair it. BUT it really helps to have a craft background and patience, and a little common sense to modify things a bit to make it work. If it were in a spot I used daily say, my car seat it would have been much more difficult to have taken a week to play with it. The back of a couch? Pfft. Nobody sees that and you have time to mess with it until you get it right.

Bottom line: it's more work than advertised, but doable and cheaper than taking it to a professional to be redone, if you have the time and patience.

Honest reviews on Permatex 80902 Vinyl and Leather Repair Kit

I used this product on a very small scrape where the textured surface of the leather had been removed (e.g. a vinyl / plastic coating in cheap split or corrected-grain leathers). Most car leather interiors are of this type unless you have an expensive car with "real" leather, for which this product would not work.

Anyway... My scrape was about 1/4", and black leather. I applied the product without having to mix. Applied the texture paper, and heated the transfer tool with the heat from a butane soldering iron. Then I applied the heated tool to the transfer paper. The problem is that the transfer tool (a metal disk on a dowel) doesn't stay hot for very long. You will need to reheat it and apply at least 2-3 times. I repeated the entire process a second time, and I can find no evidence that it was ever repaired.

It looks *very* good.

But I can see how this product might not work for many people. Large holes / tears / or difficult colors to match might make this product wrong for some people. But for small scrapes, it can be very useful.

This product says it is okay for marine use. After it dried and became wet the next day the plastic patch began to dissolve and rubbed off with no effort. What a joke. I suggest they change the name from permatex to tempatex.
