I recently found these type of kits for sale for the "do-it-yourself-er" and thought I would give it a try.
Dorman is a company that's been around a LONG time and I have used their products many times before, so I rationalized that the purchase of a Dorman product from Amazon was a good risk.
The reason for wanting heated seats? Well, living in Michigan, it can be cold in the middle of the summer and my wife loves heated seats. Actually, before knowing I could add these MYSELF, we purchased her last car with factory heated seats. To get the heated seats, we had to add the $700 "cold package" and wouldn't you know, the "cold package" required the addition of the $1200 sunroof. Egads nearly $2000 extra expense to get those darned seats! Sure, we have a sunroof (that we don't use) and heated wiper parks (that I'm not sure do much) but definitely not getting a $1900 benefit. :P
We picked up a used vehicle and I found this kit on Amazon. I bought two, they arrived quickly, and I set out to install them. I do a lot of my own work on our vehicles / bikes / house / whatever; I tend to enjoy it and I can save a fair amount of money so I may have started out with more experience than the average person, however, there is one important point to make:
If you have ever installed an aftermarket stereo in a vehicle, you'll do great with these seat heaters!
The kits are high quality, come with everything you need although the "hog ring pliers" and hog rings are cheap and I wouldn't use them if I needed to redo hog rings. Modern seats today (I was working on a 2004 Van) use plastic clips and velcro for attaching to the seat base, so I didn't need the cheap pliers in the kit.
As long as you have basic hand tools, basic electrical tools, a place to work and patience these kits are a snap to install. Start-to-finish, I was able to put these in both front seats of our van in 4 hours. I was taking my time and had never messed around with seat covers before I could probably cut that time in half now that I know what tools are needed and where the correct power circuit is.
The wiring harness included is darn-near OEM quality and is about 10 feet long. All you need to do is find a circuit in your vehicle that only has power when the ignition key is on (otherwise, you could forget to turn off your heaters and return to a dead battery).

Threw one of these in my wife's Highlander and it is great. Had never done any upholstery work before, but am competent working on cars otherwise. Wasn't that hard. This kit came with everything, even hog rings and a special pliers for them. If I did this again (and I probably will) I would probably use zip ties instead. Otherwise, it was about a two hour job and fairly straightforward. The High setting is very hot, the low is a good temp for everyday in the winter.Best Deals for Dorman 628-040 Universal Seat Heater Kit
This seat heater kit was very complete. The wiring harness was OEM quality, including solid connectors where appropriate (under seat, and leading to switch). The supplied fuse tap looks like it would fit ATC-size fuses, but my car has ATM fuses (smaller than ATC), so I had to pick up a new fuse tap for my car from the auto parts store (about $3 or $4). The included switch is nice; with an amber LED for low, and a red LED for high. The middle position is off. You will need a 25/32" drill bit for the switch, or you can use a 1/2" bit and work it a little to enlarge the hole so the switch fits. The kit also includes a relay in the wiring harness, which is to prevent the switch from melting. The included zip-ties were too light-duty. I recommend using medium or heavy-duty zip-ties instead as I had a zip-tie that I installed suddenly pop loose by itself. Besides keeping your seat warm in the winter, this is great for easing arthritis pain in your lower back.Honest reviews on Dorman 628-040 Universal Seat Heater Kit
After reading others' reviews, I decided this Universal Seat Heater should be a good choice. Depending on the age of your vehicle, you should set aside at least twice as much time as they suggest for completing the job, especially if this is your first time doing something like this. And it would be wise to have two people doing it; you can always use an extra set of hands. After getting past a few issues unique to my vehicle, I completed the job and took it for a test drive. Worked the first time. And it worked very well! The seat heats up quickly; the HIGH setting is nice and toasty, while the LOW setting is plenty warm enough to keep you comfortable, even on very cold days. And the included toggle switch, when wired properly to an electrical source that only works when the key is in the ignition and the ignition is "On", allows for the seat to heat up when the vehicle is remote-started, if so equipped -an added bonus for those REALLY cold mornings!
I highly recommend the Dorman 628-040 OE Solutions Universal Seat Heater!
